An AI SEO agency is a firm that works on how a company appears in search results and in AI generated answers, such as Google’s AI Overviews and chat assistants. For an AI startup it can help once the product, the site, and the message are clear. No agency can guarantee that an AI system will mention you.

This guide explains what the label covers, what public documentation says about AI answers, and how to vet a firm. It does not name, rank, or review AI SEO agencies. Firms in this directory are scored within their categories, for example AI marketing, and the scoring is explained on the methodology page. The general hiring questions for any outside firm are in how to choose an AI launch agency. This page stays with search and AI answers.

What the label covers

“AI SEO agency” is used for at least two different services, and many firms use it for both.

  • Visibility in AI answers. Work aimed at getting a brand cited or mentioned when people ask AI assistants and AI search features about a category. You will also see this called answer engine optimization (AEO) or generative engine optimization (GEO).
  • Classic SEO done with AI tools. Keyword research, content, technical audits, and links, with AI tools used to do the work faster.

Both can be useful. They are different purchases. The first is about where your brand appears. The second is about how a familiar service is delivered. Ask a firm which one its proposal is mostly about.

What public documentation says about AI answers

Before you hire anyone, read what the platforms themselves publish. Google’s Search Central page on AI features and your website is the clearest example. It says:

  • The best practices for SEO remain relevant for AI features such as AI Overviews and AI Mode.
  • There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary.
  • To be eligible as a supporting link, a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet.
  • You do not need new machine readable files, AI text files, or special schema.org structured data to appear in these features.
  • Traffic from these features is included in Search Console’s Performance report, under the Web search type.

That page covers Google only. Chat assistants and other AI search products have their own crawlers, sources, and documentation, and they change often. A good agency will tell you which systems it is working on and point you to the documentation for each.

How it differs from other agencies

Firm typeUsually ownsTypical outputGood fit when
AI SEO agencySearch and AI answer visibilityAudits, content, technical fixes, prompt trackingBuyers research the category in search or AI tools
Classic SEO agencyOrganic search rankingsKeyword plans, content, links, technical SEOSearch demand for the category already exists
Content agencyArticles, guides, copyPublished piecesYou know what to say and need volume
Growth agencyA funnel metricExperiments across channels and onboardingPeople already use the product
Launch agencyA launch momentLaunch plan, posts, creators, PRYou need attention on one date

The growth agency guide covers the funnel side. For an AI startup, AI SEO work usually sits alongside a launch, not instead of it. A launch creates attention now. Search and AI answer visibility tends to build over months.

When an AI startup should hire one

An AI SEO agency is most useful when a few things are already true.

  • People search for the category. Buyers ask search engines or AI assistants questions your product answers. If the category is too new for anyone to ask about it, visibility work has little to attach to.
  • The site says clearly what you do. Pages describe the product, who it is for, and how it compares, in plain text. Agencies cannot make an unclear product legible.
  • You can ship changes. Someone on your side can approve and publish content and technical fixes quickly.
  • You can wait. Search and AI answers change slowly and unpredictably. Plan for months, not weeks.

If those are not true yet, fix the positioning and the site first. That work also improves what any agency can do later.

How engagements are usually shaped

Most AI SEO engagements start with some form of audit, then move to ongoing work. The names vary, but the shape is common.

  • Audit. A review of the site’s technical health, the pages that describe the product, and how the brand shows up today in search and in AI answers for a set of buyer questions. A useful audit ends with a short, ordered list of fixes, not a long report.
  • Fixes and core pages. Technical changes, clearer product and comparison pages, and answers to the questions buyers actually ask.
  • Ongoing work. New content, updates to existing pages, mentions on other sites where relevant, and regular tracking of the agreed queries and prompts.

For an AI startup that has not hired one before, starting with the audit alone is often the safest step. It shows whether the firm reads your market correctly, and it leaves you with a list your own team can act on even if you do not continue.

What to ask before you sign

Ask in writing and keep the answers. These are specific to AI SEO.

  1. Which AI systems and search features are you working on, and what documentation do you rely on for each?
  2. Which queries and prompts will you track, and how do you check whether answers mention the brand?
  3. What will you change on the site, and what will you publish elsewhere?
  4. How do you avoid low quality or mass produced pages that could hurt the domain?
  5. What will you report, and what can you not attribute to your own work?
  6. Who does the work, and which parts are automated?
  7. What does the client own when the engagement ends: content, accounts, data, and tracking setups?

A firm that answers these clearly is easier to hold to account. A firm that answers with screenshots of AI answers alone is harder to evaluate, because answers vary between sessions and over time.

Warning signs

  • Guaranteed rankings or guaranteed mentions in AI answers. No firm controls what a search engine or an AI model shows.
  • Secret methods that cannot be explained or checked.
  • Case studies or client results you cannot verify.
  • Large volumes of thin pages published under your domain.
  • Claims that a special file or markup is required for Google’s AI features, which its own documentation contradicts.
  • Contracts that keep your content or accounts when you leave.

Working with one well

Give the agency a clear brief: the product, the buyer, the questions buyers ask, and the competitors that come up. Agree on a small set of queries and prompts to track, and review them on a fixed rhythm. Keep someone on your side responsible for the facts in every page, because claims about an AI product are easy to overstate. Use the compare page to put two firms from the scored tables side by side if you are also weighing a launch or marketing partner.

Next step

If you are not sure whether you need an AI SEO agency, a launch partner, or neither yet, use get a recommendation to reach our launch team directly. Say what the product does, who searches for it, and what you have tried. This page is not a ranking, and the form is not one either.

Scores are editorial and based on each agency's public website. See the methodology.

FAQ

Questions this guide answers

What is an AI SEO agency?
The label covers two kinds of firm: agencies that help a site appear in AI answers such as Google's AI Overviews and chat assistants, and agencies that use AI tools to do classic SEO work. Many claim both. Ask which one you are buying.
Is optimizing for AI answers different from normal SEO?
Partly. Google's documentation on AI features says the same SEO best practices apply and there are no additional requirements or special optimizations to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Other assistants work differently, so the overlap is large but not total.
Do I need an llms.txt file or special schema for AI Overviews?
Not for Google. Its AI features documentation says you do not need new machine readable files, AI text files, or special schema.org markup to appear in those features. Other AI products may treat such files differently, so check each one's own documentation.
What should an AI SEO agency report?
What it changed, which queries and prompts it tracks, how it checks whether AI answers mention you, what Search Console shows for the pages it touched, and which results it cannot attribute to its own work. Be careful with reports that only show screenshots.
What are warning signs when hiring an AI SEO agency?
Guaranteed rankings or guaranteed mentions in AI answers, secret methods, results you cannot verify, mass produced pages, and contracts that keep your accounts or content when you leave. No firm controls what a search engine or an AI model shows.
